Cuyas Cumbres

On November 12, 1982, more than 40 people were murdered in the area known as Cuyas Cumbres, including Alonso Guardado. His son Genaro, a survivor of the massacre, took us there to tell what happened.

“Back then an operation included several battalions, among them elite battalions like the Atlacatl, Belloso and Bracamonte, which were all in this region. The battalion Cuarta Brigada [Fourth Brigade] and M1 as well. That day they were right here where we are now. The battalions Atlacatl and M1 spent the night here. Their goal was to chase the civil population in the region, which was controlled by the guerilla. But the civil population was unarmed. They didn’t have any weapons. Their only defense was taking to the ravines or up to the hills. When there was a military operation, there was no one to protect them”

“Those of us who survived the war thank God because we can tell our stories so that other people know the truth. And we are most interested in making it known to the world the reality of what happened, of what we went through.”
